Get ready to slumber

If the nerves are starting to build ahead of the Vhi Women's Mini Marathon, your sleep might be the first casualty. Sue Conley has a variety of suggestions from the world of beauty that are sure to help you catch your forty winks

Think you're merely sleeping when you're catching your zeds? Think again. Sally Penford, Education Manager for the International Dermal Institute, explains that we're dong so serious work while we're counting sheep. “The body uses sleep time for internal housekeeping – processing nutrients, detoxifying, renewing and recharging. If your body is chronically starved for sleep, the effects will eventually become visibly and physically noticeable.”

So in the final days before the Vhi Women's Mini Marathon, having issues sleeping is something to avoid. Much of what follows has as much to with aromatherapy as it does with skin care or creating a relaxing atmosphere in your boudoir. Basically, I'm suggesting that you pretend that you live in a spa, and that every night is the chance for a sound, revitalising rest.

1 BUBBLES Nope, sorry, not those of the Champagne persuasion. A leisurely dip in a bath doctored with L'Occitane Lavande Foaming Bath (€23) will bring on the relaxation thanks to the lavender, as well as giving your skin a lovely softness.

2 LOTIONS Follow that up with a neck-to-toe slathering of Nuxe's Prodigieux Scented Body Lotion (€19). The same fragrance as their amazing Huile Prodigieux, this scent is super soothing thanks to the sweet almond, one of the six Precious Plant oils that make it up. Or try Jo Malone London Mimosa & Cardamom Body Crème (€65): the scent will lull you into the dreamtime thanks to the addition of sandalwood.

3 POTIONS Facial oils! They are the bomb, not only because they are so good for your skin, but also because they serve as aromatherapeutic aids to rest. Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate (€42) has evening primrose and our friend lavender; Derma's Perfecting Facial Oil (RRP €85) is loaded with Argan and Rosehip oils. Either will send you gently into the arms of Orpheus, with the added bonus of a luminous complexion upon rising.

4 SPRITZES Spray your pillow with NEOM's Perfect Night's Sleep Pillow Mist (€26.45). More lavender, unsurprisingly, but it's also got jasmine and camomile in it. This works a treat: it smells gorgeous, and you'll be out like a light before you know it.
