Protect your Skin!

Don't let the sunshine in......unless you've applied a healthy layer of protection. Sue Conley insists upon SPFing from head to toe.

I know you know, but it bears repeating: wear SPF everyday, even when the sun is not shining! I can't stress the importance of this enough. Sure, there's any number of jokes we can make about our summers, but according to the Irish Cancer Society, ultraviolet (UV) levels were in fact high enough last year to cause damage on 90 per cent of the days from April to September. Ireland has the highest reported instances of non-melanoma skin cancer in Europe! I feel a bit like your mammy right about now, but this kind of cancer is easily avoidable, and with the increase in your outdoor activity, you need to mind yourselves.

For full body coverage, Dermalogica Protection 50 Sport (€37) is tailor-made for your training. The brand is notable for its lack of fragrance and nasty addictive, so you can use this without worrying about your skin reacting with breakouts or clogged pores. For the face, NUXE Sun Delicious Cream (€20) is formulated with that sensitive skin in mind and it absorbs without stickiness.

That sticky sensation was always a problem when using SPF under make up, but no longer: Emma Hardie Amazing Face Protect & Prime SPF 30 (€59) is amazing. It's in the high-budget side of things, but the littlest bit goes the longest way, and it really does work like a proper primer with the added bonus of a high degree of protection.

Don't forget your lips! I am not one for putting regular sunscreen on my mouth because: yuck. I love Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Lip Protectant with Tint (€23): you get four choices that range in the  spectrum from honey to plum, so you can wear this to work if you need to look polished, and you'll also be protected when you head out to train. Or try Maybelline Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm SPF 20 (€3.99), not just because they are cute and colourful but because they are effective and economical, too.

And don't forget about your hair, either, especially if it's colour treated. Kérastase's Soleil Summer Haircare Collection features a number of products to use, post-sunshine, to keep your hair from becoming dried out and brittle. I love the Repairing After-Sun Mask (€29.50) — nothing like a moisturising restorative treat after a hard day's training!
