The Carney Sligo Ladies Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon Team started in 1996 when two of the original team members raised funds for a local child with a disability. We got such a buzz from completing our first Women’s Mini Marathon and especially from the fun atmosphere on the day that we asked a few more people to get involved the following year. And thus began over 20 years of fundraising and competing in the Women’s Mini Marathon.
Over the 20 years we have raised a whooping €200,999.53 for a variety of local charities. Most of our fund raising takes place in North Sligo and includes table quizzes, charades and fun bingo nights held in the local pubs such as McLeans; Lauras and Collins. There are also our annual favorites, a car treasure hunt and the much anticipated cake sale held the weekend of the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon, in the local history centre in Rathcormac. In the last number of years the Carney Ladies Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon team have organised bag packing in our local Dunnes Stores, Tesco and Supervalue in Grange Co Sligo.
For the last 14 years, our mini marathon day starts off bright and early with Cecil Barber providing transport to and from the event. Of course no trip to Dublin would be complete without a stop in Tommy Scanlons, Kinnegad for our hearty & healthy breakfast of champions. Treavor, Tina and all the staff look after us so well, we even have a standing booking in Scanlon's for an evening meal, with a glass of vino, on our return journey.
Over the last 21 years our team numbers have varied from year to year but the main group remains the same. We get great support from our families, our local community and our colleagues and places of work. We are extremely grateful for the support and encouragement we have received over the last 21 years and the many local Sligo businesses for providing spot prizes. We are looking forward to many more years of competing in the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon.
