Welcome to our new blog! In the coming weeks we are going to be profiling women who have participated in the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon. Who better to start off our “Mini Interview” series than Barbara Cleary who won the 2014 Women’s Mini Marathon.
We caught up with Barbara at the announcement of new title sponsors, Vhi Healthcare. A serious distance runner with a busy race calendar, Barbara talked to us about what the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon means to her.
Why do you compete in the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon?
I run it because it is the biggest ‘women-only’ running event and that in itself creates a great atmosphere. There is also a good elite field which guarantees a good race.
How many times have you competed in the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon?
Twice, 2012 and 2014.
Where does the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon fit into a busy race calendar?
For the reasons I said at the outset, it’s an important event for me and I like to make sure to fit it into my race calendar each year.
How does your preparation change for a Mini Marathon as compared to other competitive events?
I run a lot of 10km races so I prepare for it like any other. I like to run a 5km race a few weeks beforehand in order to build up to the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon.
What’s your pre-race routine?
I do a simple warm-up of a few miles of running and some stretching.
What is your hope for this year’s Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon?
I hope to run as well as last year and would like to set a new Personal Best.
What did it mean to you to win the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon?
It was very special, I am still getting congratulations for my win!
What do you admire about the women who take part in the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon?
I admire how they raise money for charity and how some of them take up running for the first time just to take part in this event.
Who do you think is going to win the 2015 Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon?
Whoever is the fastest!!
The 2015 Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon will take place on Monday 1st of June with registration opening in early 2015. For further information visit www.Facebook/vhiwomensminimarathon. Follow us on Twitter @VhiWmm.
