Ireland’s leading health insurer, Vhi Healthcare, is to sponsor the Women’s Mini Marathon for the next five years it was announced today. The Women’s Mini Marathon is the biggest all-female event of its kind in the world, attracting 40,000 participants annually. The 2015 Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon will take place Monday June 1.
The new partnership announcement comes at a time when running, as a means to maintaining a heathy and active lifestyle, is experiencing significant growth in Ireland. According to the latest Irish Sports Monitor Report (ISM) 2013, running is the third most popular sporting activity in the country and has seen the strongest increase in participation (from 6.1% in 2011 to 8.5% in 2013). This is reflected in the popularity of the Vhi’s Women’s Mini Marathon, which is the biggest all female event of its kind in the world, with nearly 40,000 women taking part in 2014 and raising €12million for charity.

Former Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon winners Barbara Cleary, (2014), Linda Byrne (2012) and Maria McCambridge, runner up in the 2014 Dublin City Marathon and winner of 2013 Dublin City Marathon were present to celebrate the announcement. Also in attendance was the Ryan family, Catriona Ryan, Meghan Ryan (20) and Holly Ryan (17). Mum, Catriona Ryan has completed 9 Women’s Mini Marathons, her daughter Meghan has joined her for the past 5 years while her youngest daughter Holly took part in the event for the first time this year.
