#Sisterhood - Carol McMenamin from Co. Down is running for MYMY - Suicide Prevention and Intervention.
I started running in my early 40’s having never run in my life before. I was always active but never actually ran and when I started I could barely run the length of myself but with dogged persistence I stuck at it and the Women’s Mini Marathon was the first run I ever did.
Since then I’ve run several marathons and countless half marathons and 10Ks.
I set up a running club (Murlough AC) in my village of Dundrum, Co. Down in 2008 and it has gone from strength to strength with over 120 member at the last count. I also set up an events company called BORN2RUN Events in 2012 with 2 of my club mates Jane & Gerard Rowe and we organise Great Races in Great Places all over the country.
I’ll be running the VHI Women’s mini marathon for MYMY (http://mymy.org.uk/), a local charity based in Newcastle Co. Down involved in suicide prevention and intervention. Suicide is a terrible curse on our society and thankfully it hasn’t touched my family but I know so many who have been affected by it and that’s why I chose this charity to support.
I’ll be running the WMM with my sister Orla. We’ve done countless runs together including 3 of the 6 World Major Marathons. London, Berlin & New York. We may both attempt to do the remaining 3 before my 60th birthday in 5 years’ time.
