The Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon and Get Ireland Walking are working together to encourage schools to increase girl’s fitness levels by walking or jogging the 10k event which takes place on Monday 5th June 2017. The event is great fun and is hugely important for many charities throughout Ireland.
Get Ireland Walking is an initiative of Sport Ireland that is supported by Healthy Ireland and Mountaineering Ireland. Statistics show that girls reduce their fitness levels once they start secondary school and Get Ireland Walking is working to change this by supporting girls to get active. To achieve this, The Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon in association with Get Ireland Walking is providing TY students with an opportunity to raise money for their school or charity by taking up the challenge.
Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon is helping participating schools in their fundraising efforts by providing the first three winning schools with 1st Prize of €250, 2nd prize of €150 and 3rd prize of €100. Winners will be chosen from the best school images posted to the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon Instagram channel www.instagram.com/vhiwmm/ using hashtags #vhiwmm and #girlsgetwalking. All schools are in with a chance to win. The draw will take place in May and the winning schools will be notified on 29th May.
The Girls TY Challenge is open to all schools. Interested schools should enter their group into the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon by 28th April 2017, entries open 1st March, to enter please visit our website www.vhiwomesminimarathon.ie . Training plans for walkers and nutritional recipes will be available to follow on our website. Students can also keep up to date with the latest posts on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/VhiWomensMiniMarathon, and be with a chance to win one of our many competition prizes.
Get Ireland Walking advise schools to establish a safe walking route within the school grounds or surrounding area. The distances should range from 3K upwards and can be an additional environmental/health promotion project for the students overseen and supported by their teachers and parents. We would also encourage that you inform your local press/media of your plans and project.
