Charity Spotlight: St. James’s Hospital Foundation
Making a profound impact on the health and well-being of our nation
We'd like to know about your charity. Tell us who you are and what inspired the creation of your charity.
St James’s Hospital Foundation is the official charity of St James’s Hospital, one of Ireland’s largest teaching hospitals. We exist to support patients, families and staff by funding vital equipment, research, and projects that enhance patient care beyond what statutory funding can provide.
The Foundation was created to give patients, families and the wider community a way to support the hospital that so many people rely on at some point in their lives. Every donation helps us provide care, comfort and innovation at the moments it matters most.
What impact does your work have on the community?
Our work directly supports patients and families from across Dublin and beyond, helping to improve outcomes, enhance recovery, and make hospital experiences more compassionate. Funds raised through the Foundation support everything from life-saving medical equipment and clinical research to wellbeing initiatives for patients and frontline staff.
Because St James’s Hospital serves such a diverse community, the impact of our work is felt far beyond the hospital walls, supporting healthier futures for individuals, families and communities across Ireland.
Would you like to share a success story that really represents what you do?
Patients with breast cancer at St James’s Hospital have had their diagnostic journeys transformed thanks to the AS-410M Automated Sectioner, funded by St James’s Hospital Foundation donors. This advanced machine prepares tissue samples more efficiently and accurately, producing high-quality slides for pathologists to examine.
Faster sample preparation means breast cancer patients receive their results sooner, reducing the anxiety of waiting and allowing clinicians to start treatment promptly. The AS-410M is a clear example of how donor-funded innovations are helping St James’s Hospital provide quicker, more effective care, improving experiences and outcomes for patients.
How has being part of the Vhi Women's Mini Marathon supported your charity's mission?
The Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon has been an incredible source of support for St James’s Hospital Foundation. It brings together patients, staff, families and supporters in a powerful show of solidarity, while raising vital funds for patient care.
Beyond fundraising, the event helps raise awareness of our work and creates a strong sense of community around our mission. Many of our participants have a personal connection to the hospital, and the Mini Marathon gives them a meaningful way to give back, by walking, jogging or running together for patient care.
