Charity Spotlight: St Joseph’s Centre Shankill

Dedicated to dementia care, providing residential, respite, and day care services within a warm, homely environment.

We'd like to know about your charity. Tell us who you are and what inspired the creation of your charity.

In Ireland with over 64,000 people living with dementia in Ireland, and a staggering 30 people diagnosed each day; dementia is a very worryingly, an increasing in prevalence.  People living with dementia deserve to be afforded specialist dementia specific care.

St Joseph’s Centre is Ireland’s largest care home solely dedicated to dementia care, and we aspire to demonstrate excellence in how we care for people living with this very difficult illness. We are committed to providing a right’s based, person-centred, quality-of-life- focused care.  At St Joseph’s, we understand the importance of creating not just a place of care, but a true home for both the person living with dementia and their family to enjoy together.

We are a very special community of people living, working together, supporting and empowering people living with dementia to enjoy active, meaningful lives while receiving the appropriate support they need. Every person is cared for by skilled, compassionate staff experienced in supporting the complex needs of dementia, so people can live the best quality of life possible within the restrictions their illness may bring.  And we have a vibrant team of volunteers who are at the heart of St Joseph’s and come from all walks of life, age groups, and experiences, and each one is valued and welcomed.

What impact does your work have on the community?

At Saint Joseph’s we cannot change the effects dementia has on people and their families. But we can and have changed the way we care for and support people. To achieve excellence in dementia care, the best outcomes have been proven that people living with dementia should live in their own homes, supported by adequate care.
However, there is and will always be a need for long term residential care.  But this residential care must answer the very specific needs of people living with dementia including social, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs in order to be truly 'person centred'.

Saint Joseph’s Shankill, is the largest care home in Ireland solely dedicated to dementia care.

At Saint Joseph’s we want to ensure that the care people living with dementia receive is the best it can be, connecting with each person, the real person inside the illness.  We believe we have created a culture of care that can and should be replicated in all homes throughout Ireland.

We offer long term residential care to people living with dementia, we also provide day care and respite services with 120 places available each week to people living in the catchment areas of South Dublin and North Wicklow.  And we have an extensive community programme that reaches out to people in our community supporting them through sports, art, culture and networks.

Noelle  is a volunteer with St Joseph’s in our Buddy’s Café, she lives locally and is a lifelong runner, she is also living with dementia.

In order to take part in the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon, Noelle needed some support, Ciara and Emma volunteered themselves to run with her. What they didn’t realise was just how fast she is!! Noelle was the first of our group of 50 ladies to cross the finish line at 51mins!

How has being part of the Vhi Women's Mini Marathon supported your charity's mission?

Seeing so many women of all ages, from all backgrounds come together as one to celebrate and support people living with dementia and the care.
