County Champion: Martha McGrail

🌟 Meet our incredible County Champion: Martha McGrail from Sandycove, Co. Dublin! 🌟

While Martha may not consider herself a runner by any means, her journey with the Vhi Women's Mini Marathon has become a cherished tradition that holds profound significance in her life.

"In 2021, my sister and I took part in our first VHI women's mini marathon and it's now become our tradition," Martha shares, reflecting on the beginning of their remarkable journey.

"In July 2021, our mother passed away after fighting MS for a long time. This was still in the height of the pandemic, but also the start of a spell of great weather... we really believe that was mum shining down on us," Martha fondly recalls, attributing significance to the timing of their inaugural marathon.

Their participation took on deeper meaning as they navigated their grief and honoured their mother's memory. "We spoke about it and mapped out a 10k route that meant a lot for us... We reached out to family and friends and fundraised for MS Ireland," Martha recounts, highlighting their efforts to support others facing similar challenges.

"Although we are not, and are unlikely to ever run this, this is our tradition now. We map out a 10k walk and we walk and talk," Martha shares, emphasising the importance of their annual pilgrimage and the healing it brings.

As they walked, Martha and her sister found solace in each other's company and the memories they carried. "We had both, unknowingly to each other, brought a small thing that belonged to our mum on the walk with us... it was a great part in both of our own grief process," Martha reflects, acknowledging the significance of their shared journey.

In 2024, despite her plans for an evening out, Martha eagerly anticipates continuing their tradition. "Thanks VHI mini marathon for helping us create a new tradition," Martha expresses, grateful for the platform that allows them to honour their mother's legacy and create lasting memories together.

Martha's story is a poignant reminder of the power of tradition, resilience, and the enduring bonds of family. Let's rally behind Martha as she embarks on her heartfelt journey, walking in solidarity with her sister and in loving memory of their mother.

Thank you, Martha, for sharing your inspiring story with us. πŸ’–
