Charity Spotlight: Dementia Ireland

Who is Dementia Ireland Empowering Communities?

Dementia Ireland Empowering Communities, a social enterprise, founded by former primary carer Carmel Geoghegan. Carmel set up the organisation to build awareness and understanding of what a dementia diagnosis could mean for the person and their family.

What is Dementia?

Dementia is an umbrella term that covers over 400 various types of brain disease. The most common is Alzheimer, followed by Vascular, Frontal Temporal, Lewy Body and Korsakoff syndrome, which is a memory disorder that results from vitamin B1 deficiency and is associated with alcohol abuse.

What does Dementia Ireland DO?

Through this initiative Dementia Ireland facilitates workshops – bringing communities together to discuss how they can build a more inclusive society. Dementia Ireland collaborates with many sectors among them, Local Authorities, businesses, active retirement groups, educational instructions and residential care homes on ways to facilitate more inclusive communities.

Dementia Ireland works to keep highlighting the importance of an early diagnosis. We promote understanding and inclusion in our communities. We keep the spotlight on Dementia and End of Life Care; we hope to bring positive change to the lives of those living with a diagnosis, their families and extended communities.

What are we hoping to achieve?

Dementia Ireland hopes to help take the fear out of getting a diagnosis, we hope to have dementia accepted like any other life threatening disease. We want to see individuals supported and encouraged to remain working if possible, to remain connected and part of their communities. We hope to help bring a more balanced distribution of services and supports to rural Ireland.
