Charity Spotlight: Irish Kidney Association
We’d like to know about your charity. Tell us who you are?
We are an organisation of Kidney Patients and carers of Kidney Patients. We have 25 support Branches across the country and the main objective of the Association is to aid, assist by any means, counsel and support people living with, or affected by end stage Kidney Disease.
Why was this charity set up?
It began 47 years ago , when there was no support for patients living with chronic kidney disease and who needed support and guidance.
What does your charity do?
The IKA exists to make a difference to the lives of people who are kidney patients and those likely to be affected by kidney disease.
We do this in many ways , which are free of charge to our members including;
Giving our patients and/or families accommodation and a place of sanctuary when visiting Beaumont or CUH hospital with a centre on the grounds.
We help with patients going on holidays that need to dialysis when abroad, aswell as holidays in Kerry and Waterford.
We provide counselling to our patients and their families- an area we are noticing a large increase of requests.
Patient support - financial support given to our patients and their families.
Advocacy- we advocate for our patients to have a better services, ie, campaign to have Kidney Patients included in the priority group for Covid.
Organ Donor Awareness- campaigning for the awareness in our country of how important organ donation is, and how it can save lives.
What does the Vhi Women's Mini Marathon mean for your charity?
We have had women over the years run for the IKA but last year we put together a campaign for the VHI womens marathon and were taken back by the amount that signed up, knowing then that there is an increase of families affected by Chronic Kidney Disease.
With nearly 40 or more already signed up for our charity this year we now the numbers are increasing year on year. We need your platform to help raise awareness of our small charity to help fundraise for our patients and services
