Charity Spotlight: Suicide or Survive

Working to prevent suicide and to break the silence that surrounds it.

We'd like to know about your charity. Tell us who you are and what inspired the creation of your charity.

Suicide or Survive is a national charity working to prevent suicide and to break the silence that surrounds it. We deliver facilitated group programmes rooted in lived/living experience which enable courageous conversations about suicide to happen. Honest conversations are the foundation of suicide prevention where people discover the power within themselves to be able to live with suicidal thoughts.

What impact does your work have on the community?

Working in collaboration with community, voluntary and statutory agencies, we co-create and facilitate programmes for anyone impacted by suicide to include people who experience suicidal thoughts or have made attempts on their life, people who support them, and the workplaces, communities and systems around them. Our work is preventative and life saving.

Would you like to share a success story that really represents what you do?

We run unique community education programmes that break the silence and stigma that surrounds suicide like our Eden Programme, a unique 26 week preventative education programme with therapeutic supports for those experiencing suicidal thoughts or have attempted suicide. The programme is rooted in lived experience, connection and community. Here is a quote from a recent participant, 'I definitely don't have as many suicidal thoughts. I don't go straight to the thoughts of suicide now if something is wrong".

How has being part of the Vhi Women's Mini Marathon supported your charity's mission?

Being part of the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon directly supports Suicide or Survives mission by amplifying our message that courageous conversations can prevent suicide. The event provides a powerful national platform to raise awareness, reduce stigma and encourage open, compassionate dialogue about suicide in communities across Ireland.

Participation also strengthens our ability to centre lived and living experience by creating visibility for people impacted by suicide and honouring their voices through collective action. The funds raised help us deliver co-created suicide prevention programmes grounded in real experience, practical skill-building and collaboration with communities.

Most importantly, the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon helps us change how suicide is talked about – moving conversations from silence to understanding, connection and hope. This directly aligns with our mission to ensure people feel seen, heard and supported, so that even on the darkest days, hope remains possible.
